Demi Lovato is preparing for marriage! After being in a public relationship with Jordan “Jutes” Lutes since August 2022, she got engaged in December 2023.
At a screening for her Hulu project, Child Star, Lovato expressed her feelings to PEOPLE, saying, “I’ve waited my whole life for him. It’s very grounding to have a partner that is so supportive, so loving, so caring.
It’s very easy to stay centered with him because I love him so much, and he treats me so amazing.” Initially connected when they were spotted holding hands prior to the launch of her eighth studio album, Holy Fvck, Lovato (who identifies with she/they pronouns) and Jutes have shared a special bond.
He’s From Canada
Hailing from Ottawa, Canada, Jutes has an interesting background. As detailed in a past interview with Nuance Magazine, he originally pursued film studies and played basketball, later discovering a passion for songwriting during his time in Toronto.
He’s an Independent Musician
Initially signed to Capitol Records, Jutes chose to part ways with the label to focus on his independent music career, as reported by Nuance Magazine.
“I left because due to Covid, budgets got cut, and I guess they didn’t want to hold me and not give me the support I needed, which is so blessed of them to do,” he explained regarding his departure after two years.
He expressed gratitude for not being shelved, stating, “You hear about labels shelving people or holding them without pushing them, and I can’t say how grateful I am that isn’t me.
I had been wishing I could be indie again for a while just because I love being totally in charge of my own career, so it worked out quite nicely.”
He Co-Wrote Some of Lovato’s Songs
Contributing to Lovato’s music, Jutes co-wrote several tracks, including “Substance,” “Happy Ending,” and “City of Angels” from Holy Fvck. He shared on Instagram, “One of my fav songs I’ve ever worked on,” along with a clip from Lovato’s music video.
Reflecting on his writing experience, he remarked, “When I got asked to pull up and write for this session, I remember thinking what am I supposed to do in a Demi Lovato session? Only to show up and realize she was making one of the hardest rock projects I’ve ever heard.
Obviously, a crazy milestone for me, but beyond that, I feel so blessed to be a part of something I’m such a big fan of.” In addition to his writing contributions, it seems his influence extends to inspiring Lovato’s love songs as well.
During an April 2023 interview with CBS Mornings, she hinted that her forthcoming tracks may be more upbeat, stating, “I definitely am in a really good place.
I don’t know what I’m going to write about on my next album because I’m so happy. It is a really good feeling, but I don’t know what I’m going to do.” Lovato also indicated that there would be “definitely a bunch of sappy love songs—for sure.”
He’s Been Open About His Sobriety Journey
Jutes has shared his sobriety experiences openly, much like Lovato. He celebrated reaching 100 days sober on Twitter in July 2022, writing, “Learning to cope with my anxiety properly was something I was always too scared to try.
Took a long time to be ready, but I’ve never felt better mentally and emotionally. If you’re dealing with something right now that feels never-ending, just know nothing lasts forever.”
According to a source speaking with PEOPLE, Lovato and Jutes have formed a strong connection through their shared experiences.
“They joke, laugh, talk about their mutual personal problems, and what they overcame as young people in the music business,” the insider explained. “He is in awe of her talent and very supportive.”
He Uses His Music to Cope with His Emotions
During his interview with Nuance Magazine, Jutes expressed that songwriting serves as his form of therapy. “I really live to write songs,” he stated. “It’s how I first started being honest about my emotions and mental health, so my connection to it is very deep-rooted.”
He hopes that the music he creates will resonate with others facing similar challenges. “I’ve got over 300 demos on my phone, and those are just the recent ones.
So, I figured hey, no one can tell me what to do anymore, so why hoard this music to myself? Even if a song helps one person, then it has a purpose and will also make me a little cash in the process. I feel free these days and want to stop overthinking so much and just let ’em fly.”
He’s Super Supportive of Lovato
Jutes consistently expresses his support for Lovato, sharing heartfelt birthday messages and praising her musical talents on Instagram.
After their performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he shared a clip, stating, “sheeeesh best voice in the game, by a lot. u killed it rockstar @ddlovato,” and added, “ps ur f—— hot.”
He Thinks Lovato Is Gorgeous
Providing his followers with an update in December 2022, Jutes shared a series of images that included an adorable mirror selfie with Lovato. “I’m still alive, and my friends and gf are still looking absolutely gorgeous,” he wrote in the post.
Lovato also commented on Jutes’ attractiveness during an appearance on the PodcastOne podcast LadyGang. In an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE, she recounted their meeting while working on her 2022 album, HOLY FVCK.
“The way that I met my boyfriend was actually in a session,” she explained, noting that upon seeing him, she felt an immediate attraction. “I texted my friends and was like, ‘Oh my God, the hottest guy just walked in. I am so nervous. I don’t know what to do with myself,’” she revealed.
He Enjoys Skiing
During a trip to the San Gorgonio Wilderness, where several ski resorts are located in Southern California, Jutes and Lovato went skiing in December 2022. Lovato shared photos from their winter vacation on Instagram.
He and Lovato Were Friends Before They Started Dating
In a SiriusXM interview on The Morning Mash Up, Lovato shared that their friendship blossomed for several months before they began dating. “We’re so happy,” she expressed. “He’s my best friend.”
He and Lovato Made Their Red Carpet Debut in February 2023
The couple made their first public appearance together on the red carpet at Clive Davis’ Pre-Grammy Gala on February 4, 2023. Lovato dazzled in a black-and-white gown by Rubin Singer, while Jutes complemented her in a sleek black suit and tie.
“Turns out I remember how to tie my own tie,” he captioned a collection of photos on Instagram, which included a sweet moment of them kissing on the red carpet.
He and Lovato Got Engaged in December 2023
The couple’s engagement followed a “personal and intimate proposal” on December 16, 2023. They celebrated the occasion with family at a restaurant in Los Angeles.
During an appearance on The Viall Files in October 2024, Jutes shared that he proposed with an original song he wrote. “I’m not a guitar player, but I can kind of play some chords.
So it took me like a week just to write the chords for this song,” he recalled, adding that he “almost broke down crying a few times” during his performance.
He presented Lovato with a custom pear-shaped diamond solitaire engagement ring crafted by N.Y.C. luxury jewelry boutique Material Good.
He and Lovato Share a Dog
The couple welcomed a small dog named Pickle into their family, announcing their “new son” in July 2024.
